Building skills for the future

Young people who want to build a career in the construction industry were given an insight into apprenticeships thanks to Redrow Homes.

National Apprenticeship Week marked the launch of Redrow’s apprentice recruitment drive with careers talks at schools and site visits for students interested in working in the construction industry.

Alcester Academy, in Alcester, Warwickshire, is just a short journey away from The Pastures, where Redrow is building new homes and a group of 19 students in years 10 and 11 visited the development to learn about the different roles and the stages of construction.

Helen Black, enterprise education co-ordinator at Alcester Academy, said:

“The site visit is perfect example of a partnership between schools and employers to help prepare young people for work. Getting to see a building site in action was an amazing experience for our students as it gave them a realistic idea of what to expect from a career in the construction industry. We’re grateful to Redrow for the experience.”

Other activities which took place during the week included:

  • Third year apprentice Laurence Peters, who works in South Cerney, Gloucestershire, joined a careers adviser from the CITB, the construction industry’s training board, at Bristol Brunel Academy where they gave a talk to year 11 students about apprenticeships.
  • Representatives of Redrow Southern Counties were on hand to talk to aspiring young apprentices at the Berkshire Apprenticeship Adventure 2014 at the Madejski Stadium in Reading.
  • An informative talk was given to students at Deeside College in North Wales about the benefits of apprenticeships.
  • Students from the Construction Academy at Bridgend College were given tours of three construction sites at Cwm Calon in Ystrad Mynach, Woodland Meadow in Llanharan and Mon Bank in Newport.
  • Redrow also helped its existing apprentices learn more about the business. Six apprentices visited the South East regional office in Basildon, Essex, where they were given a guide to each department’s role including health and safety and customer service.

“Apprenticeships offer young people the chance to gain valuable skills, experience and qualifications while getting paid. It was great to see that so many are interested in a career in the construction industry and were keen to find out more about their options.”

Celebrating its 40th anniversary later this year, Redrow will be taking on 40 new apprentices, one for each year of the company’s history.

Redrow offers both trade and office-based apprenticeship schemes across its building sites, head office and 10 divisional headquarters in England and Wales.

Each initiative combines paid ‘on the job’ training, with the opportunity to gain a recognised qualification. Last year the company was highly commended as an employer of apprentices by the National Apprenticeship Service and secured a place in the Top 100 Apprentice Employers in England.

Applicants must be registered with the CITB, the construction industry’s training board, which can be done at: Candidates are asked to take and pass the CITB Structured Learning Exercise in order to be considered for an apprenticeship
