Marley Eternit’s Bluclad has helped create 14 Code for Sustainable Home Level 4 properties for Wandle Housing Association in South West London.
Bluclad exterior render boards helped deliver the goal of creating affordable, low-maintenance homes for the 14 families who now live in the properties on Batsworth Road, Mitcham.
Property developers, Oakwood Group, specified Bluclad because of its outstanding dimensional stability, which reduces substrate movement, a common cause of surface cracks on rendered facades.
Bluclad offered additional benefits in that its dimensional stability avoided the need for applying adhesives at butt joints. This saved time for the installers and creating a more stable substrate to apply the final render system.
Marley Eternit’s Bluclad can be used as a substrate for a variety of thin coat polymeric renders, textured finishes and other surface coatings.
Adam Ramage, Senior Quantity Surveyor at Oakwood Group, said: “We put forward Bluclad for this project because, having used it on previous developments, we felt that its dimensional stability gave us a superior backing system for the rendered facade. Our aim on this development was to create affordable, low maintenance housing and this drove all our decisions around choice of materials.”
Bluclad is available in a standard 10mm thickness, with a smooth surface on the front and a textured surface on the reverse for thin coat polymeric renders.
Being factory hydrophobised means that Bluclad can be exposed to weather without rendering for up to four weeks. Available with a full range of accessories and standard thicknesses, boards can be used with other systems and therefore contractors are not tied to one particular method.
Bluclad has Class 0 and EN13501-1 fire performance, combined with an installed life expectancy of at least 50 years. It is 100 per cent recyclable.
A combination of cement render, facing brickwork and aluminium cladding is used across the facades of the Batsworth Road properties, with the walls meeting a U value of 0.24W/m²k. The development achieved Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4.
