Scape Group CEO comments on ONS construction output data

Mark Robinson, Chief Executive of Scape Group, comments on the latest construction output data from the ONS:

“Today’s data shows a fall in construction sector output, but you need to look at the big picture to understand what this really means and not focus too much on monthly fluctuations. April and May were affected by insecurity caused by the election, the threat of a Mansion Tax, and the prospect of an uncertain result post-election which unsettled the sector, but now we have a majority government we predict growth in output will continue on an upward trajectory. When comparing the three months, March 2015 to May 2015 with the same period a year ago, construction output actually increased by 2.7 percent, showing that the market is healthy and there is strong investment in the sector.”

“In our latest Construction Industry Tracker we called on the government to liberalise planning laws to help make 2015 a bumper year, so we welcome the Chancellor’s acknowledgement of industry concerns and the radical liberalisation around planning and building new homes. We are confident this is exactly the momentum the construction sector needs to make 2015 the best year for output since records began – helping us to build a better Britain.”
