New Biodiversity Net Gain Regulations to impact all new developments

Developers are being urged to prepare for the new Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) legislation, which will apply to all new residential planning applications of 9 units or more from November 2023. The rules will require any new development to leave the environment in a better condition than it was previously.

Biodiversity Net Gain is an important concept as it not only mitigates the effects of development, but also improves areas for biodiversity. The benefits of BNG include cleaner and greener areas to live and work, more habitats for wildlife to thrive, improved natural flood protection, and a positive impact on the effects of climate change.

Meadfleet, a leading sustainable land management company, has been preparing for the regulations and is familiar with the intricacies of Biodiversity Net Gain. Their team of in-house ecologists, including its Operations Director, are trained in the BNG metric and are already applying the principles of Biodiversity Net Gain across Meadfleet’s existing open space portfolio in England and Wales.

Meadfleet’s long-term management model and expertise mean that they can meet and exceed the requirements of the 30-year covenant, ensuring a suitable solution for the management of the covenant in perpetuity. Meadfleet offers management of Biodiversity Net Gain delivery both on a managed development and on offsite areas, either via customer contributions or commuted sums.

Samantha Hursey, Operations Director and Ecologist at Meadfleet said,

“We understand that developers will want to ensure a suitable long-term management solution for the management of the 30-year covenant. We have been operating for over 25 years and our sustainable approach to land management means we have been applying the principles of Biodiversity Net Gain for some time now. Via initiatives such as our award-winning Bee Friendly Campaign, we have enhanced and created 1000s of square metres of habitat.”
