By Chris Haughey, Managing Director at McCoy Contractors
It’s a question that continues to shape conversations across our industry, and rightly so. Construction has traditionally been seen as a male-dominated sector, but the reality is evolving. At McCoy Contractors, we believe that creating a more inclusive workforce isn’t just a social responsibility, it’s essential to the future strength, resilience and innovation of our business and the wider construction industry.
Over the past decade, there has been a growing recognition of the role women can and should play across all areas of construction. While progress has been made, there is still more to do to break down outdated perceptions and open doors for talented individuals, regardless of gender. The industry is facing well-documented skills shortages and attracting a broader, more diverse talent pool is critical to addressing this challenge. Encouraging more women into construction is a key part of that solution.
At McCoys, we’re proud to be playing our part by employing women across a wide variety of roles within our business. This is not limited to office-based or administrative positions. Women are contributing across the full spectrum of our operations, from plant operators and site operatives through to technical, commercial and head office roles. This diversity of experience and perspective strengthens our teams and enhances the quality of the work we deliver.
On site, the presence of women in roles such as plant operation and groundwork is helping to challenge long-standing stereotypes about what a ‘typical’ construction worker looks like. These are demanding, highly skilled positions that require precision, awareness and technical competence, and the women working in these roles at McCoy Contractors demonstrate these capabilities every day. Their contribution is not only valued, it’s vital.
Equally, in our head office and support functions, women are playing key roles in project management, procurement, finance, health and safety, HR and administration. These positions are crucial to the smooth running of any construction business, ensuring that projects are delivered on time, within budget and to the highest possible standards. Having a diverse team across these areas brings fresh thinking, improved problem-solving and stronger collaboration.
Representation matters. When young people see women working successfully in construction roles – whether on site or in leadership positions – it helps to shift perceptions and inspire others to consider the industry as a viable and rewarding career path. At McCoys, we recognise the importance of visibility and are committed to supporting and promoting the achievements of the women within our business.
However, attracting more women into construction is only part of the equation. Retention and progression are equally important. Creating clear career pathways, offering training and development opportunities, and fostering a supportive working environment are all essential to ensuring that women can build long-term careers in the industry. This benefits not only individuals, but also businesses and the sector as a whole.
Looking ahead, the importance of women in construction will only continue to grow. As the industry modernises, adopts new technologies and responds to changing demands, having a diverse workforce will be crucial to driving innovation and maintaining competitiveness. Businesses that embrace inclusivity will be better placed to adapt, grow and succeed.
For McCoys, this isn’t about meeting targets or ticking boxes, it’s about building a stronger, more capable team. By welcoming women into every part of our business, from site to office and everywhere in between, we are not only challenging outdated norms but also investing in the future of our company and the construction industry as a whole.
Change doesn’t happen overnight, but it does happen through consistent effort, open-mindedness and a commitment to doing things differently. By continuing to support and champion women in construction, we can help create an industry that truly reflects the diverse society it serves and one that offers opportunity for all.
