Alumno breaks ground on new 262-bed student residence in Glasgow.

Alumno has officially commenced construction on its new c.£23 million purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) development on St George’s Road in Glasgow, marking a significant step forward in addressing the city’s well-documented shortage of student housing.

The six-storey, 262-bed development will be delivered by main contractor Clark Contracts, following their appointment to complete the design and build of the scheme. The breaking ground ceremony to mark the start of works was attended by representatives from the Alumno team and members of the project professional team.

Located in the west end of the city and in close proximity to Glasgow city centre, the building sits within the vibrant Woodlands district, currently one of the most sought-after student neighbourhoods that benefits from access to nearby local shops, bars, restaurants and cultural venues. It responds to the lack of PBSA currently available in Glasgow and is expected to help ease demand elsewhere while delivering positive social and economic benefits to the local community.

Accommodation will comprise a mix of four- and five-bed cluster flats and studio apartments, supported by a range of shared amenities including a ground floor common room, sixth-floor dining, study and lounge spaces, and landscaped courtyard areas to the rear.

David Campbell, CEO of Alumno said:

“Student accommodation should feel like part of a neighbourhood, not separate from it. This development has been shaped by a deep understanding of Woodlands and is designed to foster a genuine sense of belonging for students while respecting the area’s existing character. By focusing on wellbeing, shared spaces and everyday social interaction, we’re creating a community that supports students during a pivotal stage of their lives, while also bringing lasting social and economic benefits to the wider area.”

Michael Scanlan, Director at Clark Contracts, commented:

“We are pleased to be working alongside Alumno and the wider professional team to bring this development forward and look forward to seeing it progress on site. This project further builds on our strong track record within the PBSA sector, having delivered over 1,400 student beds in recent years.”

The project is funded by Henderson Park and the professional team includes Stallan Brand Architects, RankinFraser Landscape Architecture, Will Rudd Davidson, Ridge and Partners and Sound Advice Acoustics. Completion is scheduled ahead of the 2027 academic year.
